Over the past year, it has become clear that the Australian digital community has a growing appetite for genuine, in-person connection. On Tuesday, 27 October, we brought that energy to Besk for our latest AWIA Offline event, and the Perth web community showed up in full force.
With an excellent turnout of designers, developers, agency leaders, and digital specialists from across the local industry, the evening was a great reminder of the value of bringing people together beyond their usual work environments.
AWIA Offline events are designed to take a refreshingly unstructured approach to networking. No formal agenda, no keynotes, and no sales pitches. Instead, we aim to create a relaxed, welcoming space where people can grab a drink, meet someone new, reconnect with familiar faces, and let organic conversations take centre stage.
From exchanging ideas about the challenges facing our industry to discussing emerging technologies and sharing experiences from across different businesses, the evening delivered exactly what these events are all about: genuine connections and conversations that matter.
Here are a few highlights that stood out from the night.
One of the most valuable aspects of bringing people from different parts of the web industry together is discovering just how many challenges we have in common. Throughout the evening, conversations touched on everything from navigating client expectations and managing project pipelines to adapting to evolving technology, building stronger teams, and starting new ventures.
While every agency and business has its own circumstances, there is plenty of common ground across the industry. Having the opportunity to share experiences, discuss different approaches, and learn from people facing similar challenges can offer a fresh perspective on problems we encounter in our day-to-day work.
Another highlight was the willingness of attendees to share their knowledge and experiences. People were open to exchanging practical insights, recommending useful resources, making introductions, and discussing what has and hasn't worked in their own businesses.
These conversations are an important part of building a stronger industry. Sometimes, the most valuable takeaway from an event isn't a formal presentation or a structured learning session, but a quick conversation with someone who has faced a similar challenge or approached a problem differently.
The degrees of separation within Perth's web community are remarkably small! With people working across different agencies, disciplines and areas of expertise, the evening highlighted just how interconnected the local industry is.
Whether attendees were meeting for the first time or reconnecting with familiar faces, there was a genuine willingness to engage, share ideas and learn more about what others are working on.
It was also a reminder that strengthening these relationships benefits more than just individual professionals. A connected industry creates opportunities for collaboration, knowledge-sharing and new partnerships, helping businesses and people across the community grow together.
One of the clearest takeaways from the evening was the value people place on having the time and space to connect without a formal agenda.
When conversations are allowed to develop naturally, attendees can explore the topics that matter most to them, whether that's discussing industry trends, sharing business experiences, talking through a technical challenge or simply getting to know someone new.
Feedback from attendees reinforced the importance of creating these opportunities. There was a strong appreciation for the relaxed format and the chance to have genuine conversations with people working across the local industry.
This is exactly what AWIA Offline aims to achieve: creating opportunities for the web community to connect in a way that feels natural, accessible and valuable.
AWIA representatives Sharne Wiehl and Shannon Murray were thrilled with the turnout and the level of engagement throughout the evening. The event was a fantastic opportunity to bring Perth's digital and web community together, and we're excited to continue creating opportunities for these connections to grow.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Besk, contributed to the conversations, made new connections and helped make the evening such a success. We also extend our thanks to everyone who helped bring the event together and to Besk for hosting us.
The success of Offline Perth reinforces why these gatherings are so important. Our industry is constantly evolving, but having the opportunity to connect with the people behind the work remains just as valuable as ever.
AWIA Offline events bring together members of Australia's web and digital community in major cities across the country. We look forward to hosting more opportunities to connect, exchange ideas and strengthen our industry in 2027.
